Box Score TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (November 14, 2023) – With minutes left in regulation of a pool play match against Barton College, the No. 3 Salt Lake Community College men's soccer team appeared to be cruising to a berth in the NJCAA tournament semifinals.
Instead, a late goal lifted the match into overtime, where the Bruins eventually suffered a 2-1 loss. The result also set up a bizarre tiebreaker Wednesday to determine Thursday's qualifier from 'Pool C' into the NJCAA semifinals. The loss dropped SLCC to 17-2-2 overall.
Khaya Gregory got the Bruins on the board in the first half, scoring in the 32nd minute off a Carles Zomeno assist. It was a 1-0 Salt Lake lead until the 86th minute, when Barton's Lucas Dos Santos scored. Nicolas Galanis then scored in overtime to lift Barton to the win.
Barton's win set up an interested setup in 'Pool C', with the Bruins, Barton and Indian Hills playing a tiebreaker on Wednesday. Barton and Indian Hills will play a ten-minute half, with the period ended on a goal by either side. After the period, there will be a 20 minute rest period, followed by the winner playing Salt Lake for the right to advance to the semifinals.
Wednesday's elimination rounds will open at 1:00 p.m. CST on Wednesday.
