TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (October 27, 2023) – The epicenter of college sports was on the Wasatch Front Saturday, more specifically on the campus of Salt Lake Community College.
A notable event took place on the SLCC campus in Taylorsville Saturday, with the No. 2 SLCC men's soccer program successfully claiming the Region 18 championship, downing USU Eastern by a score of 3-1. The victory advances the Bruins to next week's NJCAA West District championship match, with the winner advancing to the NJCAA tournament.
After a scoreless first half, the Bruins got working in the second half as Sawyer Heaton scored a goal in the 53rdminute off a Carles Zameno assist. Larry Noel posted a goal in the 63rd minute, followed by Francisco Tita scoring in the 66th minute.
It was actually USU Eastern who was the aggressor, posting a 14-10 advantage in total shots. The Eagles were repeatedly shut down by SLCC goalkeeper Ben Williams though, with Williams posting 4 saves.
SLCC is now 16-0-2 overall. The Bruins are 12-0 at home this season.
Salt Lake will host Arizona Western on Saturday for the NJCAA West District championship match. The match will start at 1:00 p.m.
