Box Score TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (November 19, 2022) – A dream season ended with an abrupt awakening Saturday for the No. 10 Salt Lake Community College Women's Soccer team.
Playing in the NJCAA Division-I Women's Soccer Championship match for the second time in 18 months, SLCC was hoping to use its experience to claim its first-ever national title. Instead, the Bruins were just outside of claiming the top prize, falling to No. 8 Iowa Western in a 1-0 decision. The loss drops SLCC to 14-3-2 to end the season.
Both teams went back-and-forth, with Iowa Western holding an 18-8 edge in total shots. The Bruins used goalkeeper Theresa Wiesiolek to stay in the match, with Wiesiolek posting four saves. Iowa Western finally broke a scoreless tie in the 36
th minute, posting its lone goal on a Marta Llopis unassisted score.
Wiesiolek was named as the NJCAA Tournament 'Defensive MVP', allowing only two goals through the entire tournament. Lexi Vernsey had a pair of shots in the loss.
This was Salt Lake's third consecutive season qualifying for the NJCAA semifinals, with two appearances in the NJCAA championship match. The Bruins were both the Region 18 and NJCAA Western District champions.
