This Week in SLCC Athletics – Week of October 24, 2022

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (October 26, 2022) – The postseason has finally arrived for the Salt Lake Community College Athletic Department's Fall season sports.

Both the SLCC Men's-and-Women's Soccer programs will play as high seeds in this week's Region 18 tournament, with the Bruins hosting the Region 18 tournament from Thursday and Saturday at Zions Bank Stadium. No. 3 Salt Lake Volleyball will travel for its final week of Scenic West Athletic Conference play, with the SLCC Cross Country programs will participate in a local dual meet.

Cross Country: After several weekends of strong competition, the SLCC Cross Country teams will compete in a local dual meet this weekend.

Both the No. 4 SLCC Women's team and the No. 6 SLCC Men's team will run in a dual meet in Logan on Friday, representing the program's last competition prior to the NJCAA championships on November 12 in Florida.

Men's Soccer: The No. 1 SLCC Men's Soccer team will have a target firmly planted against it this week as the Bruins host the Region 18 championships at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman.

Salt Lake will look to defend its Scenic West regular-season title, along with its Region 18 title, in an opening match against Southern Nevada on Thursday. If they win, the Bruins will then advance to play the winner of a match between USU Eastern and Snow. SLCC went 2-0 against the Coyotes during the season.

SLCC's match against Southern Nevada is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. at Zions Bank Stadium on Thursday.

Volleyball: After falling in a competitive home loss last week, the No. 3 Bruins are ready to get back to their winning ways after several days off.

Salt Lake will travel for its final weekend of Scenic West play, competing against No. 6 USU Eastern on Thursday and ending the regular season at Colorado Northwestern on Saturday. The Bruins are undefeated against both teams so far this season.

SLCC coach Shay Goulding Meurer said dropping a match against Southern Idaho last week had little effect on the team's overall mindset.

"This week is a big one for us," she said. "USU Eastern is playing great volleyball and we will need to expect them to be on top of their game as they host us in their gym. They are strong defensively, so we will bring the mindset that we don't care how many swings it takes – we will keep swinging until the match is over."

Women's Soccer: A disappointing loss led to the No. 9 Bruins losing the opportunity to be the top seed in this weekend's Region 18 tournament.

However, Salt Lake will still have an excellent chance to claim the region title, facing off against third-seeded USU Eastern in the opening round Thursday. SLCC lost a close 2-1 home decision to USU Eastern Saturday, having earned a win against the Lady Eagles earlier in the season.

Salt Lake will face off against USU Eastern at 1:30 on Thursday at Zions Bank Stadium.
