No. 1 Bruins earn thrilling overtime win to finish NJCAA pool play, advance to semifinals

Box Score TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (November 17, 2021) – 'Two wins down, two more wins to go'.

Those words echoed around the No. 1 Salt Lake Community College Men's Soccer program Wednesday, as the Bruins concluded play in Pool A of the NJCAA Division-I Men's Soccer National Championships in thrilling fashion. SLCC earned a 2-1 win over Daytona State in double-overtime, lifting the Bruins to their second-consecutive national semifinal appearance. Salt Lake is now 19-0 with the victory.

"Overcoming adversity and finding a way to win is a critical part of success in tournaments like these," said SLCC coach Mark Davis. "Every single team here is fighting for a national title, so the stakes are high and the competition is fierce. I'm just happy our guys found a way to win."

Salt Lake opened scoring in the match, with Omar Gomez getting the Bruins on the board in the 25th minute. SLCC held a 1-0 lead until early in the second half, when Daytona State scored to tie the match. Both programs fought back-and-forth until Sergio Martinez hit the game-winner in the 110th minute, scoring on an unassisted goal to send the Bruins to the NJCAA semifinals.

Despite the close score, Salt Lake held a strong 17-5 margin in total shots. Bruins goalkeeper Christian Olivares finished with four saves in the win.

"Our guys played extremely tough throughout some tense moments," said Davis. "We have a well-rounded team, which is something we'll need as we continue throughout this tournament."

Salt Lake will now advance to play in the NJCAA semifinals, which are scheduled for Friday in Tyler, Texas. SLCC will face off against the lowest-seeded remaining team in the 2:00 p.m. semifinal, with the winner advancing to play in Saturday's championship match.
