No. 9 SLCC Volleyball downs MSU West Plains

Box Score TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (September 4, 2019) - The No. 9 Salt Lake Community College volleyball team continued its season-opening momentum, stretching their run to 9-0 to open the season with a win over MSU West Plains inside the Lifetime Activities Center Wednesday.

The win did not come easily or quickly for SLCC, as the Bruins were finally able to claim the 3-2 victory on a 17-15 fifth-set victory. The victory is SLCC's first match that has gone five sets this season.

The Bruins claimed the first set, 25-11, before MSU West Plains earned a close 25-22 win in the second set. The Bruins turned the tables in the next set, taking a 2-1 lead into the fourth set before MSU West Plains claimed a 27-25 win to tie the match at a pair of sets apiece. Finally, Salt Lake had two match points in the final set before two attack errors helped the Bruins earn the narrow victory.

Gwen Russell had a team-high 16 kills to lead Salt Lake, while Sammi Johnston had 13 kills. Bruna Correa contributed 3 aces for SLCC.

Salt Lake will travel to Twin Falls on Friday for a two-day tournament featuring some of the nation's top programs. The Bruins are scheduled to open Scenic West Athletic Conference play on Sept. 26.
