No. 14 SLCC Men's Soccer eager for home opener Sunday

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (August 28, 2019) - The No. 14 Salt Lake Community College men's soccer team had a successful time opening the 2019 season in Arizona last week, earning a sound victory over a respected foe while finishing in a draw with the NJCAA's top-ranked program.

Yes, the Bruins are in a good place as they prepare for their home opener on Sunday against Northeastern Junior College, with one of the strongest resumes of any program in the country. Even better is the fact the Bruins have a chance to enter Scenic West Athletic Conference play without a loss.

SLCC assistant coach Ty O'Connor said the team showed its ability in the weekend's play in Arizona.

"This past weekend went well with a lot of positives on the men's side," he said. "Our culture has continued to grow stronger on-and-off the field. With two good results, we believe we need to be better."

Northeastern Junior College will be a quality regional matchup for the Bruins in their final preseason match this season. Northeastern started the season at 2-0, including wins over Northeast Community College and Pratt Community College. NJC will play two more matches before facing Salt Lake Sunday, including facing off against Scenic West foe Snow College in Ephraim on Saturday.

O'Connor said NJC will provide a good measuring stick for the Bruins as they prepare for the start of league play in mid September.

"We look forward to this Sunday's match," he said. "We're taking it one day, one play at a time right now. Our team is hungry for the next win right now."

SLCC's match against Northeastern Junior College will start at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman. The Bruins will open Scenic West Athletic Conference play on Thursday, Sept. 12 against USU Eastern.
