TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (August 28, 2018) - The tests keep coming for the No. 15 Salt Lake Community College volleyball program, but the Bruins continue to pass them with ease.
Salt Lake hosted Eastern Arizona inside the Lifetime Activities Center Tuesday for their home opener, starting a week that will see them play five matches. SLCCÂ will head into this weekend's matches with great confidence, after a 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-13) sweep of Eastern Arizona to move to 5-0 on the young season.
The Bruins held Eastern Arizona to a hitting percentage of .011, helping SLCC dominate the match. In comparison, Salt Lake hit .298, posting 39 team kills in the three sets. The Bruins held a narrow 13-12 lead in the first set before rattling off five-straight points to take control of the set. SLCC wasn't seriously challenged in either of the next two sets.
Hellen Lacava led Salt Lake with 13 kills, followed by
Ariane Pola's 8 kills.
Bruna Correa posted a season-high 34 assists in the match, playing a strong role in her team's offensive success.Â
Salt Lake has a strong weekend of play ahead, as the Bruins welcome in a group of teams for the annual "Crystal 'Inn'vitational." The Bruins will have an especially tough schedule, with SLCC starting the tournament on Friday with No. 4 New Mexico Military Institute, followed up by No. 5 Western Nebraska Community College. The NMMI match will start at 12:00 p.m., with the WNCC match starting at 4:00 p.m. inside the Lifetime Activities Center.
The Bruins will play at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday against Central Wyoming College, finishing at 3:00 p.m. with Missouri State University-West Plains. Live stats for the tournament can be found at www.slccbruins.com.Â
