Box Score TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (October 5, 2018) - Friday evening was a time for celebration for the No. 4 Salt Lake Community College volleyball team.
After all, the Bruins were celebrating 'Dig Pink Night' - a cancer-awareness event that incorporates the entire campus community in the celebration of raising awareness and financial support for cancer research-and-awareness efforts in Utah. While that celebration was spectacular, SLCCÂ had much to enjoy after finishing with a 3-0 sweep of No. 2 College of Southern Idaho, earning a 25-22, 25-20, 25-18 victory in Scenic West Athletic Conference play.
Salt Lake earned narrow victories in each of the three sets, finally taking the lead in the third set at 15-14 with a
Bruna Correa service ace. The Bruins took their first lead in the first set on a CSI attack error, one of 23 attack errors in the match for the Golden Eagles. The match also ended with a hitting error by CSI, after a
Lauryn Ritchie kill set up match point.Â
SLCC's defense limited Southern Idaho to a hitting percentage of just .134 in the match, countering with a hitting percentage of .259. The Bruins had a strong offensive performance, with
Hellen Lacava finishing with 13 kills and
Ariane Pola finishing with 12 kills.
Bruna Correa continued her strong season at the setter position, finishing with 36 assists.
The win lifts Salt Lake's overall record to 21-1 and 5-0 in the Scenic West Athletic Conference. The Bruins are now the only undefeated team in the league, giving them an advantage in the race to win the regular-season title and host the Region 18 championships.Â
Salt Lake will head out on the road again next week, traveling to play at Western Wyoming on Tuesday in a non-conference matchup. The Bruins will play league matches at home on Friday and Saturday, versus Colorado Northwestern and USU Eastern. Friday's match will start at 7:00 p.m. inside the Lifetime Activities Center, with Saturday's match starting at 3:00 p.m.
