No. 3 Bruins Volleyball prepares for "Sophomore Night", SWAC title match

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (October 23, 2018) – Difficulty may have finally found the No. 3 Salt Lake Community College volleyball team last weekend, but that doesn't mean that everything the Bruins have fought for isn't still sitting in front of them.

Salt Lake left a road match with top-five Snow College last weekend on the losing end, dropping their overall mark to 24-2 and 8-1 in league play. Still, as the Bruins play to attain their season-long goal of winning the Scenic West Athletic Conference championship, SLCC is focused on recovering and playing well in advance of two important matches this week.

SLCC will host Western Wyoming on Tuesday night, playing a non-conference match at 6:00 p.m. at the Lifetime Activities Center on "Sophomore Night" – the program's annual celebration of its sophomores. The sophomores playing for Salt Lake have been part of two 20+ win seasons, with this year's season setting up to be one for the record books. This year's sophomores include the likes of Callie Whitney, Jensyn Turner, Lauryn Ritchie and Kayla Elliott.

Western Wyoming is just 11-15 on the season. Salt Lake defeated WWCC 3-0 on the road earlier this season.

Bruins coach Sue Dulaney said honoring the contributions of players who pass through the program is vitally important.

"Our annual "Sophomore Night" is always an emotional night," she said.

While honoring players will be a central goal Tuesday, Friday's goal will be rooted in setting up for the post season. Salt Lake will travel to Twin Falls to face off against Southern Idaho, a program that sits just behind SLCC at 7-2 in SWAC play, meaning Friday's match will act as a quasi-conference championship game.

With a solo league title and a potential Region 18 hosting slot on the line, Dulaney noted the importance of the match.

"It's a big match," she said. "We will fight and claw on Friday as we want to bring the Region 18 tourney to Bruin Arena next week."

Friday's match will start at 6:00 p.m. in Twin Falls. Live stats for the match can be found at csiathletics.com. Tuesday's "Sophomore Night" match will start at 6:00 p.m. at the Lifetime Activities Center on the Redwood Campus.
