TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (October 16, 2018) - The No. 14 Salt Lake Community College men's soccer team had a slight setback last weekend, but the overall goal of the Bruins is still in reach as they head into the final weekend of the regular season.
The Bruins have had the goal of winning the Scenic West Athletic Conference all season, preparing for it throughout a long conference season. While SLCCÂ has occasionally had setbacks, including one in a loss last weekend at Southern Nevada, Salt Lake still sits in solo first place in the conference, with a full-game lead in the standings. With that advantage in mind, SLCC can shut the door on the title closed with victories over Snow College Wednesday and USU Eastern Friday.
SLCC coach
Mark Davis said this weekend's matches are tough to understate, in terms of their importance.
"Our entire season has built towards being in the position we are as a program this weekend," he said. "We wanted to have a chance to earn the Scenic West Athletic Conference championship, followed with the right to have the top seed in the Region 18 championships next week. Everything we want as a team is right in front of us."
Snow College is the first opponent of the week, with Salt Lake hosting them at Zions Bank Stadium on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. Snow, who is nationally-ranked at No. 20, sits a game behind Salt Lake in the standings, with a league record of 7-3. A SLCC win over Snow on Wednesday would guarantee the Bruins no worse than a share of the regular-season title.Â
The Bruins travel to USU Eastern on Friday, with the Eagles sitting at 3-7 in the league. Salt Lake has previously defeated USU Eastern 5-1 and 5-0, dispatching them in both matches at Zions Bank Stadium. USU Eastern is 4-3 at home.
Davis said he's excited for his players to respond to this weekend's challenges.
"Every coach is trying to lead student-athletes to a position where they can achieve great heights," he said. "I'm excited that our players have put us in a position to achieve a goal that we set when we started this program."
Wednesday's match against Snow College will start at 3:00 p.m. at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman, while Friday's match at USU Eastern will start at 3:00 p.m. in Price. Recaps for both matches will be available later that night at www.slccbruins.com.Â
