Box Score 2 TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (Sept. 8, 2017) – The fourth-ranked Salt Lake Community College Bruins finished day one of the Starr Corporation Invitational at 1-1, earning a split of the day's action.

The Bruins earned a 3-0 sweep of Yavapai College (25-23, 28-26, 25-14) in the morning match, but fell to Hutchinson Community College in the afternoon action 3-0 (21-25, 19-25, 23-25). The tourney is being hosted by SWAC rival College of Southern Idaho.

The day's first match against Yavapai featured a close, back-and-forth nature, even though Salt Lake swept the sets. After earning a narrow victory in the first set, the Bruins trailed the Roughriders 24-19 in the second set, before
Kayla Elliott's service powered Salt Lake back into a 24-24 tie that the Bruins turned into a win.

To'a Faleao led the Bruins with 12 kills in the morning match, while reigning SWAC Defensive Player of the Week
Alexus Desmarais finished with 21 digs for Salt Lake.
Sam Filiaga contributed four blocks for SLCC.

In the afternoon match, the Bruins were outmuscled by the Hutchinson CC Blue Dragons. It was only the second time this season that Salt Lake was swept in a match, with the first time coming one week ago against top-ranked Miami Dade.

Both Faleao and
Lia Finau led the Bruins with ten kills.
Laken Te'o contributed 27 assists for the Bruins.

Salt Lake will play two matches in Saturday's action. The Bruins will open their day at 1:00 p.m. against Monroe Community College and will conclude action with a 3:00 p.m. match against Casper College.
