Salt Lake falls to Snow in Region 18 tourney opener

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (October 27, 2017) - Hope seemed to spring eternal for Salt Lake Community College's men's soccer program entering the Region 18 tourney, even though fall was fast approaching on a sunny morning in Las Vegas.

Instead, like the rapidly falling leaves on the Wasatch Front, the Bruins' season ended Friday in a Region 18 opener against in-state Scenic West rival Snow College, with SLCC falling 3-2 to the Badgers. The loss ends Salt Lake's second season of men's soccer competition, with the Bruins finishing the year with an overall record of 10-6-1 and 8-4 in SWAC play.

It was the Bruins who struck first in the match, as Drake Cook netted a goal in the match's sixth minute to give Salt Lake an early 1-0 lead. However, Snow quickly responded in the next minute with a goal by James Pena. The Badgers netted three goals in the first half, proving to be all the scoring they would need.

Salt Lake got back in the match in the 75th minute, as Raul Sanchez found the back of the net to cut the deficit to 3-2. Then, trailing by a goal in the match's final minute, Cook had a corner kick with hopes of sending the match to extra time. The opportunity couldn't be converted on though, with Salt Lake falling in disappointing fashion.

It was Salt Lake who led most of the offensive statistical categories in the match, minus the scoreboard. The Bruins held a 9-7 advantage in shots-on-goal,

Snow College will advance to play the winner of a match between USU Eastern and top-seeded Southern Nevada in the Region 18 championship match Saturday.
