ROCK SPRINGS, WY – Fresh off two wins to open up the young 2014 season, the No. 8 Lady Bruins were all business as they are coming home from Wyoming unscathed with a perfect 4-0 record.
Match one featured SLCC wasting zero time putting familiar foe Utah State University Eastern away 3-0 with scores of 25-16, 25-19 and a dominant 25-10. Freshman
Kallie Schmit (Kalama, WA) was sensational from the outside hitting .409 leading to 12 kills.
Mariana Pilon (Sao Paulo, Brazil) again was huge on the defensive side with 16 digs.
The team also combined for 13 blocks led by five blocks alone from
Sequoia Lofton (Spokane, WA).
Match two put SLCC in a position they have not been in so far this season, behind. Dropping the first set to Central Wyoming College 18-25. The Lady Bruins quickly shrugged off the slow start and swept the next three sets 25-12, 25-13 and 25-23 en route to the 3-1 victory clinching the four match sweep in the Region 18-Region 9 Clash.
It was Schmit's 13 kills with a .500 average and
Brighton Taylor's (Bountiful, UT) four aces that gave SLCC the momentum leading to the win.
SLCC will now return home and prepare to host the Crystal "Inn"vitational in the Lifetime Activities Center Friday and Saturday, Aug. 29-30. The Lady Bruins will open play Friday at 10 a.m. against No. 2 nationally ranked Iowa Western Community College.
