SALT LAKE CITY – Less than 24 hours ago, the No. 7 Bruins took one on the chin with a tough 0-3 sweep from the hands of No. 4 College of Southern Idaho. Today, SLCC nearly dominated from start to finish with a convincing 3-1 win over the visiting Cardinals of North Idaho College.
Using a balanced attack, the Bruins came out on fire in set one to jump out to an early 10-5 lead. Having an answer for everything that NIC was throwing at them; SLCC rolled with that momentum and opened up a 23-15 lead. Closing in on the set, a stifling SLCC defense forced consecutive Cardinal errors to clinch the 25-15 set win.
Set two began in similar fashion with four different Bruins cashing in points to place the score at 10-3 including assisting blocks from
Sequoia Lofton (Spokane, WA) and
Kallie Schmit (Kalama, WA). Continuing their dominance, SLCC used a four point and a three point streak to reach a 2-0 advantage once again with a 25-15 score.
Coming out of the break, NIC was able to gain the lead for the first time in the match by using a four point run to place the score at 6-9. Continuing to put pressure on the Bruins, 12 SLCC errors throughout the set saw the Cardinals reach set point 20-24. Hoping to end the match in three sets, a 5 point run from SLCC including three straight kills by
Carol Grasso (Sao Paulo, Brazil) now saw the Bruins at match point 25-24. However, NIC responded with a 4-1 placing the score in their favor 26-28 to force a set four.
SLCC quickly responded from the set loss and left no doubt in set four cruising to an easy 25-12 set win clinching a 3-1 match victory.
Schmit led all players with an 18 kill, 10 dig double-double and was named player of the match. Grasso played solid as well with 17 kills, respectively. As a team, the Bruins hit .354 overall. Also, in her first career start,
Mckell Moss (Layton, UT) paced SLCC defensively with 15 digs.
Brittany Aldridge ended up one kill away from a double-double with nine kills and 10 digs to lead the Cardinals.
With the win the Bruins improve to 14-6, 2-1 in the Scenic West Athletic Conference. NIC drops to 7-6 overall, 2-1 in the SWAC.
Now the Bruins will hit the road for nearly the rest of October as their next match will be Friday, Oct. 10, against Utah State University-Eastern in Price, UT. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
