SALT LAKE CITY – Despite a slow start where the Bruins fell behind by as much as three, the No. 6 SLCC volleyball team responded in a convincing way to sweep the Spartans of Colorado Northwestern Community College.
Coming out as flat as they have all year, the Bruins saw themselves in an early hole 6-3 with all of the momentum appearing to be on CNCC's side. SLCC combated with a run of their own to take a 8-6 lead.
The Spartans, however, continued to hang around with consistent answers against the Bruins. Then SLCC finally turned it on.
Leading 17-15, the Bruins went on a seven point run including a miraculous hustle play where
Kallie Schmit (Kalama, WA) almost went into the stands to keep the possession going leading to a kill from
Brighton Taylor (Bountiful, UT). SLCC went on to win the opening set 25-16.
Set two was pure domination from SLCC. Schmit pounded down five kills in the set and as a team SLCC totaled five blocks, three of which came from
Jessica Quayle (Ogden, UT) en route to the 25-9 victory.
The Spartans somewhat matched the fire they opened up the match in set three jumping out to a 5-7 lead. SLCC went on to score 11 of the next 13 points including two kills apiece from Schmit and
Carol Grasso (Sao Paulo, Brazil) to regain control of the set and cruised to a 25-17 set win for the 3-0 sweep.
Schmit led all players with 11 kills hitting .455 followed by Grasso's eight kills. Both Taylor and Quayle added six kills as setter Jessica Davis (Riverton, UT) had 26 assists. Libero
Mariana Pilon (Sao Paulo, Brazil) was named player of the match with her 15 digs and three assists.
The Bruins improve to 19-8 with the win, 7-2 in Scenic West Athletic Conference play.
Next up the Bruins will wrap up their regular and conference schedule tomorrow, Nov. 1, as Grasso, Pilon,
Sequoia Lofton (Spokane, WA),
Ailin Donati (Rome, Italy),
Allyssa Koki (Ewa Beach, HI), and
Cassandra Fenton (Helendale, CA) will play their last home match in a SLCC uniform. "Sophomore Day" festivities will be held prior to the match start time of 1 p.m.
