TWIN FALLS, ID – Heart and passion. That is what the No. 10 SLCC volleyball team played with today against No. 3 CSI leading to an intense 3-1 win.

On Oct. 3 the Bruins welcomed the Golden Eagles to the Bruin Arena and got embarrassed with CSI sweeping SLCC in dominant fashion.

Today was a completely different team and story.

Set one opened up with each team trading points until CSI put together a mini run to jump ahead 5-9. A service error from the Golden Eagles resulted in a four point run for SLCC to knot things up at nine apiece. Trading points once again throughout the set and with the score at 22-22, a service ace for the Bruins and back-to-back attack errors from CSI gave SLCC the 25-22 set one win.

Perhaps with a bitter taste in their mouths, CSI responded in set two with an early lead. Crawling their way back into the set SLCC tied things up at 10-10 followed by an ace from Rachel Davis (Riverton, UT) giving the Bruins their first lead of the set. That lead was short lived however as CSI answered and then cruised to an easy 18-25 win to even the match 1-1.

Coming out of the break for the crucial set three, it looked like it could have been déjà vu for SLCC as the Golden Eagles led 6-12 and continued the trend placing the score at 13-18. Not wanting to repeat what happened in that Oct. 3 affair, the Bruins went on a six point streak highlighted with kills from Kallie Schmit (Kalama, WA), Brighton Taylor (Bountiful, UT), and Nicole Peacock (Logan, UT) putting the score at 19-18. Heading down the stretch neither team would give in until a kill from Jessica Quayle (Ogden, UT) and an attack error from CSI gave SLCC the 25-23 set victory and a 2-1 lead.

As they did in previous sets, set four opened up with the Golden Eagles up 0-5. Looking like a fifth set could be on the horizon, the Bruins negated that thought and slowly chipped away at the CSI lead and ultimately evened the score 10-10. With neither team able to pull away the Bruins were able to gain a one point advantage 20-19, but a minor injury to Schmit looked as the momentum was going to swing to CSI's side. Replacing Schmit, Penny Gwynn (Hamilton, MT) took over and left no doubt with three kills and an ace giving SLCC the set by a score of 25-21 sealing the match victory.

In a great team effort many players shined led by Carol Grasso's (Sao Paulo, Brazil) double-double with 15 kills and 16 digs. Schmit had 10 kills herself, Taylor added seven blocks, and Peacock hit .429 with three kills as SLCC hit .322 offensively with six aces.

Davis and Cassandra Fenton (Helendale, CA) set up the hitter extremely well adding 29 and 11 assists, respectively. Defensively Davis accounted for 16 digs while Mariana Pilon (Sao Paulo, Brazil) chipped in 13 as well.

The Bruins now improve to 18-8 and are in sole possession of second place in the Scenic West Athletic Conference.

SLCC will now return home and wrap up their regular season on Halloween at 7 p.m. and "Sophomore Day" on Saturday, Nov. 1, at 1 p.m. Both matches will have a live webstream available at live.ksl.com.
