SALT LAKE CITY – Back on Sept. 23, No. 6 SLCC, who was ranked No. 9 at the time, hosted then ranked No. 7 Western Wyoming Community College and defeated the Mustangs 3-1.
Today, the No. 11 Mustangs hosted the Bruins in Rock Springs, Wyo., and in similar fashion the lower ranked host came away with the 3-1 win.
Set one opened up with the Bruins jumping out to a two to three point cushion throughout the set only to turn it on late in the set winning 25-19.
WWCC answered the call in set two taking down the Bruins 20-25 to even things up 1-1 heading into the break.
During the break, something must have clicked inside the WWCC locker room as the Mustangs came out firing on all cylinders and dominated set three 16-25 to place the Bruins in a desperate state.
In a must win situation for SLCC, the two battled back-and-forth only to fall short 23-25 and give the Mustangs the redemption win from Sept. 23.
Kallie Schmit (Kalama, WA) paced the Bruins offensively with 14 kills hitting .354.
Jessica Quayle (Odgen, UT) chipped in 12 kills by way of hitting .269.
Brooke Bergstrom (Riverton, UT) came off the bench and added two aces as
Carol Grasso (Sao Paulo, Brazil) turned to the defensive side for the night and compiled 20 digs.
The loss gave the Bruins their lone loss of three matches in a span of five days and puts their overall record at 16-7 and 4-1 still in conference play.
SLCC will now quickly turn around and travel to Ephraim, Utah to take on conference foe No. 8 Snow College on Saturday, Oct. 18. First serve is currently scheduled for 1 p.m.
