SALT LAKE CITY – Finding themselves in an unfamiliar position down 0-2, the No. 6 SLCC volleyball came through on the road to win 3-2 over Utah State University-Eastern.
Despite two closely contested sets to open up the match, it was the home team USU-E that was able to pull out both set by scores of 23-25 and 21-25 to take a 0-2 advantage of the Bruins and pose a threat of a sweep heading to the break.
Possibly having a little bit of a bitter taste in their mouths, the Bruins showed just how resilient they are and the comeback was on.
SLCC dominated set three with a score of 25-11 and rolled with the momentum and took set four 25-19 to stretch out the match and force a decisive fifth set.
Similar to sets one and two, the two teams battled but this time it was the visiting Bruins that came out on top 15-13 to clinch the miraculous come from behind win.
The bench play was crucial as plenty of Bruins shined in what was a complete team effort for the win.
Brighton Taylor (Bountiful, UT) was one of those bench players as she put down nine kills in 19 attempts to hit .368.
Penny Gwynn (Hamilton, MT) also came off the bench and pounded 10 kills including eight straight kills without an error.
Defensively
Mckell Moss (Layton, UT), who was replacing injured
Mariana Pilon (Sao Paulo, Brazil), and
Carol Grasso (Sao Paulo, Brazil) each accumulated 26 digs and
Cassandra Fenton (Helendale, CA) added 14 digs and two aces.
With the win SLCC improves to 15-6, 3-1 in conference play.
The Bruins will now travel to Rangely, Colo., and take on the Spartans of Colorado Northwestern Community College. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. as live streaming will be available. Fans, click
