Council Bluffs, IA—The No. 6-ranked SLCC Volleyball team (1-3) lost a pair of five-set contests at the Reiver Classic on Saturday. SLCC picked up one win in three matchups against teams ranked in the Top 5 in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) polls over the weekend.
The Bruins lost Saturday's first game to Polk State College (PSC) (1-2) 3-2 by scores of 22-25, 25-20, 25-14, 19-25 and 15-13. SLCC fell in the afternoon contest to No. 1 Western Nebraska Community College (WNCC) (4-0) 3-2 by scores of 25-15, 21-25, 19-25, 25-22 and 13-15. Three of the four weekend matches for the Bruins at the Reiver Classic went the full five sets.
SLCC vs. PSC: Bruin freshman outside hitter Carol Grasso (Sao Paulo, BRA) hit for a .307 average and turned in 16 kills in the losing effort.
SLCC vs. WNCC: Grasso led the Bruins with 19 kills and seven service aces in the loss to WNCC and sophomore defensive specialist Indigo Allen (North Salt Lake, UT) finished with 23 digs.
Next up for Head Coach Sue Dulaney and the Bruins is a pair of home matches on Friday, Aug. 30 at the SLCC Tournament. The Bruins will face No. 8-ranked Missouri State University-West Plains at Bruin Arena with a 10 a.m. first serve and SLCC will host Central Arizona College at 2 p.m. The pair of matches will be the first home games of the season for SLCC.
