SLCC Men's Basketball standout Skyler Halford commits to play at Brigham Young University
Salt Lake City, UT—Region 18 Champion and
No. 5-ranked SLCC Men's Basketball (28-3, 14-1 SWAC) announced on Tuesday that standout sophomore guard
Skyler Halford (Orem, UT) has committed to play at Brigham Young University (BYU) next season. Halford will sign his National Letter of Intent this coming April.
The Business major commented on the rollercoaster ride and media circus that surrounded his commitment to Head Coach Dave Rose's highly touted basketball program.
“Monday night was crazy, I got a lot of texts and calls until at least midnight—I'm really excited to go and play at BYU, but I've got to stay focused on what we're doing at SLCC right now, this year,” Halford said. “Not to down play it, because it's an awesome opportunity but I'm really just glad to get it done. The recruiting process with BYU has been fun, but I've still got work to do here with Bruins.”
Halford was selected as the Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC) Player-of-the-Year, Region 18 Tournament Most Valuable Player and was named a First Team Region 18 All-Tournament selection.
Halford leads the SWAC in scoring and is averaging 17.9 points per game to go with 4.8 rebounds and 3.8 assists per contest.
Skyler is shooting 47.8% from the field and is shooting 91.9% from the free throw line to lead the Bruins to a
No. 5 NJCAA ranking and the team's first
Region 18 Championship since 2009.
Halford is currently at 42.5% shooting from three point range and has 46 steals on the season.
Next up for
Halford and the Bruins is a trip to Coolidge, AZ to face Central Arizona College (CAC) (27-4, 20-2 ACCAC) for the District I Championship on Saturday, Mar. 9 at 7 p.m. The winner of the District I Championship earns an automatic bid to the NJCAA National Tournament in Hutchinson, KS.
SLCC Men's Basketball practices weekdays from 3-5:30 p.m. at Bruin Arena inside the Lifetime Activities Center on the Taylorsville Redwood Campus.
